Gold Fire Assay: AAS Finish or Gravimetric Finish?

Crucibles in a fire assay furnace

Two ways to finish a gold fire assay

After fusion and cupellation, the precious metal bead can be measured in two ways.

AAS finish

The bead is dissolved and measured by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). This is an industry-standard route for gold in exploration and mining samples.

Gravimetric finish

The gold is weighed directly. This is well suited to high-grade samples (above about 30 g/t Au), where it offers high precision.

Which should you choose?

If you expect mostly lower grades, an AAS finish is usually appropriate. If you expect high-grade samples, a gravimetric finish is the better choice. If you are unsure, contact us and we will help you choose.
